For all my Canadian friends that are interested in purchasing the iPhone on July 11 I’m sure you have read the Rogers rate plans by now. And if you are a poor boy like me you are most likely as angry as I am.
For weeks after the announcement on June 9th there have been many rumors that Rogers would be consumer savvy and make their rate plans on par with AT&T in the US. At $30 per month for unlimited data downloads the iPhone is very attractive. If you have ever played with it you would know that the web experience is amazing. You can view webpages just as they are on your home computer. Heck you can download and watch YouTUBE videos. Thats a lot of data. The cheapest plan allows only 400MB of data download!!! I can go through that in a few hours. Thats ridiculous! The most expensive plan is $115 a month and allows 2GB. Thats incredibly expensive.
OK I admit those plans include talk time minutes and anywhere from 75 to 300 text messages. They have a plan extension that gets you voicemail and call display and 2500 text messages. Thats more reasonable but there should not be a need to spend an extra $15 a month for it. So for what I can afford (about $75) all I can get is a few text messages and 400MB of data.
This almost makes the phone not worth it. The hardware is great at $199! You get a phone, an iPod, a GPS and a game device. I paid that much for my iPod nano 8 months ago. You cannot go wrong with that. The data plans are a piss off though. I sent the following message to the Rogers comment line earlier today.
This is with regards to the recently posted rate plans for the upcoming iPhone launch. I am completely disgusted with the ridiculous prices you are charging. In this day in age we Canadians should be leading the world in telecommunications technology and adoption. This is a very large setback to that goal. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Six years ago I had to make a choice on a wireless phone provider and after doing a comparison of rate plans amongst the major providers in Canada I decided one of your competitors was cheaper and had better features. To this day that is still the case, but since I am a huge fan of all things Apple I was willing to forgive and forget. I was going to be one of the first people standing in line on July 11th to purchase the iPhone but this arrogance on your part has caused me to think otherwise. I guess I expected more from Rogers. This truly saddens me. Thank you for taking the time to consider my opinion.

We are sorry to hear that our iPhone 3G voice and data packages value
are less than you were expecting. We would like to point out that they
do offer more data and airtime than our traditional packages and they
also come with the added features of bonus text messages and visual
voicemail. However, we appreciate that this release has come with
expectations from our customers.
Each carrier has a different pricing strategy. Rogers has designed a
pricing structure that offers high-value, flexible voice and data
packages so that Canadians can make the most of their iPhone 3G
To fully appreciate everything this device has to offer (phone, iPod and
Internet in one 3G device), our price plans include both voice and data.
We have a wide selection of high value, flexible plans to meet your
The majority of carriers offering iPhone 3G worldwide do not have
unlimited plans for this device. Some carriers have implemented a “soft
cap” so the plan isn’t truly “unlimited”. For example, in France the
soft cap is 500MB where we have a plan that includes 4 times that amount
in your bucket. Unlimited plans could end up costing you more for what
you don’t use.
Based on reports that the average usage for the first generation
iPhone was less than 100MB per month, our iPhone 3G plans more than
accommodate the vast majority of customers. Rogers’s customers get 4
times the data on our $60 entry level plan (400 MB) and 20 times the
data on our most comprehensive plan.
